Why Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello Broke Up

Last week Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello ended their relationship, and some reports reveal the reason for their breakup.

Mutual Decision

The 23-year-old Canadian and 24-year-old pop star made it clear that they were ending their 2-year relationship on good terms when they posted matching statements to their respective Instagram Stories on Wednesday, Nov. 17.

They said:

“Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever. We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”

E! revealed it was Mendes that started the talk that led to their breakup. Although she was “very upset over the split,” she “agreed” it was for the best, that source added.

“The relationship was getting stale and complacent and they decided they are better off being friends,” E!’s source said.

Entertainment Tonight was also told by a source that the breakup wasn’t one-sided. “Shawn and Camila’s breakup was mutual,” the source said. “They realized they are in totally different places in their lives at this point, and it was time to end things. They’re both sad about the split, but doing their best to take care of themselves, stay busy, and surround themselves by loved ones.”

Remaining Friendly

There are also speculations that the quarantine and coronavirus pandemic played a big role in their fate as a couple and why things stopped working. The two of them spent months together during the lockdown in Miami, and once they became busier with work, the whole vibe changed.

Mendes and Cabello began dating in July 2019 (after the music video for “Señorita” dropped and caused everyone to start speculating) but they were best friends for years before then. They seem to be keeping their word and remaining friends, as they are still supporting each other on social media.
