Famed writer and director Joss Whedon has been hired for a sequel of the box office hit, ‘The Avengers’. He will be renewing his behind-the-scenes role as the unofficial boss of ‘The Avengers’ characters: Iron Man, Captain America and their superhero group.
Robert Iger, CEO of Walt Disney Co., announced Tuesday that Whedon was indeed asked to write and direct the sequel. He said this during a company earning call. The upcoming sequel will again be adapted from Marvel Comics.
Iger also said that Whedon is helping out in developing a new TV series on Marvel-based characters and plot. This will air on Disney’s network, ABC. Marvel is also a subsidiary of Disney.
There were no further details provided on the date when the production would start or the release date of the sequel.
Whedon made Disney a huge hit in the worldwide box office through the first installment of ‘The Avengers’. It raked in $1.5 billion this year, making it the year’s biggest movie.
Avengers co-stars will also have themselves swamped with their own solo sequels of the film. Robert Downey Jr. is currently filming ‘Iron Man 3’ due to release May of next year, while Chris Hemsworth will be filming a sequel to ‘Thor’ set to release in November of next year as well. Chris Evans will be reprising his role as ‘Captain America’ and will have his own sequel targeted for April of 2014.
