For the past fortnight, the French Riviera has hosted the world’s best filmmakers, from Quentin Tarantino, and Terrence Malick, to debut directors Ladj Ly and Mati Diop.
Probably the biggest film of the festival, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, was met with almost unanimous praise.
The film is to represent a landmark entry into his filmography, it is primarily a period piece that explores hippie culture and the Hollywood studio system in late 1960s LA.
It is already been predicted that with the dream pairing of Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, the film will no doubt be one of the biggest films of 2019.
Everything We Know About Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
It is not a secret that Tarantino is a cinephile with a keen interest in film history, and judging by the film’s title it is safe to assume that this will be his portrait of a town he knows very well.
“I’ve been working on this script for five years, as well as living in Los Angeles County most of my life, including in 1969, when I was seven years old,” he said.
“I’m very excited to tell this story of an LA and a Hollywood that doesn’t exist anymore.”
He also stated out of all his films this one probably resembles Pulp Fiction the most, suggesting that it will have a tapestry-like quality, with a possibly non-linear narrative.
The Cast
Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’s cast includes some of the greatest and most eclectic ever working on the same movie, from Al Pacino to Lena Dunham, and involves portrayals of Hollywood figures like Roman Polanski and Bruce Lee.
The film follows Rick Dalton, an actor who starred in the Western television series Bounty Law, during his struggle to transition to movies which did not work out, portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio.
His neighbour is Sharon Tate, an actress and late wife of Roman Polanski, portrayed by Margot Robbie. And Brad Pitt is cast as Dalton’s longtime stunt double and close friend.
The general release date is set for July 26th, 2019.
