Strike Plans Create Hollywood Dissension

It seems that not everyone is in favor of the planned SAG strike, but not everyone isn’t either.

Over 130 stars of stage and screen have signed a petition calling on the Screen Actors Guild to abandon their plans for a strike vote, among them Tom Hanks, George Clooney and Charlize Theron , who asked SAG to reconsider their position.

“We support our union and we support the issues we’re fighting for,” read the document. “But we do not believe in all good conscience that now is the time to be putting people out of work.”

SAG hopes that a strike vote will improve their bargaining power with the various studios since negotiations for a new contract ended without resolution in July of this year.

However, the proposed strike has created quite a rift among its 120,000 union members, with some stars signing a petition against it, while others,  like Mel Gibson and Martin Sheen publicly backing the idea..

The guild needs 75% of members to support the vote  in January. If successful, it could vastly impact  the February 22 Oscars ceremony, among other things.

The acting industry is still recovering from last year’s writers strike, which left entertainment reeling and led to the cancelling of the 2008 Golden Globes Awards.

..and what do YOU think..   are they just greedy or do the  multi-million dollar players have a good reason to be striking and screwing up another season of entertainment for the viewers? Sound off.. we’d love to hear what you have to say.

I frankly think its ridiculous. Those guys aren’t really underpaid and their working conditions aren’t poor, nor are they undervalued. If anything their perks are a bit over the top.
What’s the actual point of the strike vote?

Got to agree with that one. Still I spose they have the right to strike if they want to strike.

Given all the prima donna stuff we hear about that they ask for and get on the set, I”d have to agree that they dont’ suffer any from the long hours and low pay.

Does anyone REALLY know what they are striking for.
Let’s face it. Its a fairly ridiculous scenario actually. Do I think they are just being greedy..
hm.. let me see. millions of dollars for a movie, private trailers and catered foods, and they don’t like that so much they want to strike.
Put me down for the vote on greedy.
