Sire Terry Wogan Narrowly Escapes Death

Sir Terry Wogan, the famed broadcaster revealed that he narrowly avoided death when his home caught fire.

The 70-year-old informed his Radio 2 breakfast show listeners that the fire  that razed his home began in his drier while he and his wife were sleeping. His daughter Catherine was woken by the smoke alarm and Wogan phoned emergency services.

The broadcaster praised firefighters who battled the blaze for two hours, saying: “They were absolutely wonderful. We were five minutes from disaster. We’re just lucky it wasn’t more serious. The firefighters were so calm and collected throughout. I have nothing but praise for them.”

He continued: “They had no idea whose house they were coming to and didn’t know me from Adam when I made the call.

“It could have been so different, had they not reacted as they did. And so fantastically. The house still reeks of smoke whilst I smell like a haddock. It’s those around me I feel sorry for!”
