After years of wrangling Saturday 29th March 2014 was a momentous day in the UK as it became law to allow gay couples to marry. One couple who are delighted with the new law are Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish, as they plan to marry next month in a quiet ceremony at an English registry office.
Sir Elton, 67, and his partner David Furnish, 51, have been speaking to NBC’s Today Show about the law change. Sir Elton said, “I’m very proud of Britain and the laws that we’ve seen come into existence since we’ve been together. We’ll do it very quietly. But we will do it and it will be a joyous occasion.”
The couple celebrated their civil partnership in 2005 with 650 guests at a ceremony in Windsor, but their actual marriage will be a much more low key affair as Furnish was quick to point out. He said, “We don’t feel the need to take an extra step legally. But since we’re committed for life, we feel it’s really important to take that step, and take advantage of that amazing change in legislation. I think what we’ll do is go to a registry office in England in May, and take the boys with us, and a couple of witnesses.”
