The chart topping 25-year-old star shocked his fans while preparing to release his second album “The Thrill of it All” on November 3, by saying he enjoys to wear heels and dresses.
Talking About His Sexuality
Just a week before unleashing his new album, Sam Smith let his fans peek into the person he was and the person he became today, in an interview opening up to writer Louis Wise about his sexuality, his gender and the passion for women’s clothes.
First he explained that it took him so long to come out as a gay publicly because of the fear of saying the wrong thing and offend someone. When he started working on his first album he was just 19 years old and he didn’t know what message he wanted to portray. He was the only gay person in the village and he moved to London to pursue his career.
He used his experience for writing music and the song “Him” is about a son coming out to his father. The song is only semi-biographical since he came out to his family at the age of 10. His mom said she knew since he was three and his father only asked him if he was sure. They were incredibly supportive.
His sophomore album is to be released on November 3 and his new songs portray his growth and his confidence.
“I think they show me. They show the gay guy I’ve become” he said.
Passion for Heels
Sam found confidence in his youth to rock women’s clothes without fear of consequences and that brought him respect.
“I love a heel,” he said.
“I’ve got loads of heels at home.” he continued in the interview adding that this didn’t come with his fame but it has been his passion for years.
At 17 he became obsessed with Marilyn Monroe and Boy George and he wore full make up, eyelashes, leggings, Dr Martens and fur coats to school for over two years. At the time he didn’t own any piece of male clothes. When asked whether he is a “cisgender” man he simply responded “I don’t know what the title would be, but I feel just as much woman as I am man.”
He also openly spoke about drowning his break-up sorrows in alcohol and going out too much but now, rumor has it he has a new boyfriend, Brandon Flynn, a 13 Reasons Why star.
