Mindy Kaling Gives Update on Legally Blonde 3 Along with Some Surprising News

Mindy Kaling has shared how her writing role for the upcoming Legally Blonde 3 came to be and some exciting personal news.

How It All Happened

Earlier this year Kaling revealed that she is co-writing the third “Legally Blonde” movie.

The actress first gained recognition starring as Kelly Kapoor in the NBC sitcom “The Office”, for which she also served as a writer, executive producer, and director.

The 41-year-old has recently appeared on Good Morning America, and updated the fans on how the project is coming along.

She shared that she spent years quoting “Legally Blonde” to her friend and frequent costar, Reese Witherspoon, before Witherspoon approached her with the idea to make a third movie.

“I’d been working with her on a couple movies and we’ve been friends for a while,” Kaling said. “I have always quoted the movies to her — I was that annoying friend that would be like, ‘Bend and snap’ to her. And she asked me, ‘You know, I’d really love to revisit this character.’”

“I was nervous because the movie is so iconic,” she said. “But then I thought, ‘It’d be really fun to see that character in her 40s. What is Elle Woods dealing with as a 41-year-old woman?’”

Kaling continued, “And it’s been really funny to write. I’m working on it with my friend Dan [Goor], and I think it’s going to be a great movie for Reese and people are going to love to see her in this part.”

Shocking the Internet

Kaling also made the surprise announcement on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” She revealed not that she is pregnant — but that she already gave birth. Spencer was born on September 3.

“I’m telling it for the first time now — it feels so strange, but I gave birth to a baby boy,” she said.

“No one even knew you were pregnant!” Colbert exclaimed.

“I know,” she said with a laugh. “This is news to a lot of people.”

“How did you keep this secret?” Colbert asked.

“Well, no one saw me,” Kaling said. “There was so much going on and so much heartbreak in the world that it felt strange to go out of my way to shine a light on some giant health information,” she said. “One time, I did [get caught by paparazzi] and I thought now they’re gonna know, because I was eight months pregnant.”

“I look very pregnant, I would say. I think this is what’s funny: They were too nervous to claim that I was pregnant,” she joked. “They were like, ‘Oh yeah, Mindy Kaling just looks like this.’ ”

The actor-writer-producer has had a busy quarantine. She co-created the Netflix series “Never Have I Ever,” which has just been nominated for three E! People’s Choice Awards. Kaling also released a new essay collection on October 6 entitled “Nothing Like I Imagined (Except for Sometimes).”
