One man was killed and two others were seriously injured after the stage that was being constructed for Madonna’s Sticky and Sweet tour collapsed in Marseille, France. Four more were injured after the stage fell apart at 5:15 p.m. their local time. “At this point we don’t know how it happened, but we are confident no one else is still under the rubble,” officer David Goddin told CNN. Roughly 27 fire trucks and 80 firemen descended on Marseille’s Stade Velodrome after the accident. It apparently took some time to get the people removed from the rubble.
“My prayers go out to those who were injured and their families along with my deepest sympathy to all those affected by this heartbreaking news,” Madonna said in a statement. Madonna was apparently not in Marseilles during the accident. She was scheduled to perform tonight, at Udine, Italy’s Stadio Friuli.
CNN reportsed that a 53-year-old man was killed, with one British and one American man reported as severely injured. “There were a lot of open fractures, of injuries, it was a messy sight,” a rescue worker told Agence-France Presse, CNN reported. Madonna was scheduled to perform Sunday at Marseille’s Stade Velodrome as part of her Sticky & Sweet Tour. Marseille deputy mayor Jose Allegrini said that Madonna’s concert would be canceled.
