Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 has broken world box office records for its opening weekend. The previous biggest single day at the box office was set by Twilight Saga: New Moon with £44 million. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 topped the last record of £99million for the debut three days held by the 2008 Batman movie, The Dark Knight.
Part of the reason for the spike in the films taking is the higher ticket price to see the 3D version of the movie.
The 8 films in the series have taken in £4billion altogether, making JK Rowling’s Harry Potter the largest-grossing franchise ever. Then on top of that staggering figure is revenue from DVD’s and merchandise.
The first film, of the series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is still the record holder for the franchise itself. Sorcerer’s Stone raked in £604.8million globally. Only time will tell if that record can be broken too.
