The 2006 hit comedy-drama The Devil Wears Prada, is based on Lauren Weisberger’s best-selling novel of the same name.
The movie stars Meryl Streep as a demanding fashion magazine editor, and Anne Hathaway as her assistant, who went to New York City as an aspiring journalist.
This hugely successful film adaptation was nominated for two Academy Awards—including one for Streep’s performance and earned $326 million worldwide.
Now it’s getting another adaptation, but this time as a musical.
The Devil Wears Prada the Musical in the Works
Producer Kevin McCollum confirmed the news to the Chicago Tribune, and also said that it was “important” for director Anna D. Shapiro “that it premieres in Chicago.”
However, he did not make any comments about a future move to Broadway in New York City.
In a joint statement with Fox Stage Productions’ Bob Cohen, McCollum also said: “To bring The Devil Wears Prada to the stage, we knew we needed to find artists as inimitable as the characters in the story.
We needed artists whose work has run the gamut from music and publishing to drama and fashion. We could only think of two names: Elton John and Paul Rudnick.”
Elton John Excited to Work on the Songs
Along with the playwright Paul Rudnick, Grammy winner Elton John will join the project.
“I’m a huge fan of both the book and the feature film, and a huge aficionado of the fashion world,” the singer said. “I can’t wait to sink my musical teeth into this hunk of popular culture,” he stated, as reported by BBC.
We’re expecting great things from this creative team involved in the composition of the theatrical version of The Devil Wears Prada, and can’t wait to see it performed on the stage.
The musical will premiere at the James M. Nederlander Theatre in Chicago on July 14 and run until Aug. 17, 2020 and the cast is not known yet.
