The actor and straight talking hard-man Danny Dyer is all set to ditch his film career as he has landed the role as landlord in the long running BBC soap EastEnders.
Dyer, 36, has made it quite clear in the past that he would not accept any role in EastEnders until he was at least 50, but that is all set to change as he is to start filming later this month and appear on screen around Christmas time.
Speaking four years ago about the possibility of appearing on the show Dyer said, “It was flattering to be told I could save the show, but it’s not right for me at the moment. Maybe when I’m fat, bald and 50.” Earlier this year he joked the only way he would join the cast was if he was Ian Beale’s lover as he joked, “Me going into EastEnders would be a big statement. It would be the end of my film career probably. If I did it I’d want to sign for ten years and say, ‘This is it’, then be Ian Beale’s lover.”
Dyer has now made a complete U-turn as he said, “I’m so excited about starting a new chapter in my career and I cannot wait to become part of the East End family.”
Ratings for the show are at an all time low and even dipped below the five million mark earlier this year, so the shows bosses have acted quickly to secure the services of the typical “Cockney Geezer” that is Danny Dyer. It will be interesting to see how he gets on, but things can not get any worse for the flagship show, or can they?
