Charles Barkley wants to become Governor of Alabama

Charles Barkley

Retired NBA star/television celebrity Charles Barkley has once again told the media that he is planning to run for Governor of Alabama.

Barkley, who is an Alabama native, spoke about his hopes of following in former actor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s footsteps during the historic Democratic National Convention earlier this week. However, Barkley can’t run for Governor of Alabama until 2014, since he has to live there for seven years first.

“I’m planning to run for governor of Alabama. I have to live there for seven years. I bought my house there last year. I have homes in Arizona and Pennsylvania, but Alabama needs more help,” he told New York Daily News.

This is not the first time the former basketball player is playing with the idea of becoming a powerful politician. In 1995, Barkley considered running as a Republican candidate for Alabama’s governorship in the 1998 election, but he later changed his mind as well as political stance, saying that he was a Republican until they lost their minds.

In July 2006, he also talked about running for governor, stating that he wanted to work on real issues such as improving schools and cleaning up neighborhoods.

These days, Barkley is an Independent. “The Republicans are full of it,” Barkley once told ESPN . “The Democrats are a little less full of it.”

Hmmm… Could this be the reason why he supports Barack Obama??? Just asking!
