The son of late rock ‘n’ roll star The Big Bopper is selling his father’s coffin on eBay.
The Big Bopper, real name JP Richardson, died in a plane crash along with fellow musicians Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens in February 1959.
Richardson was buried for 48 years, but his son had he, and his casket exhumed to move him to a more visible location with a life-size statue and historic marker. He was reburied in a new coffin donated by the Batesville Casket Co.
His son now hopes to sell the original casket to raise funds for a musical show about his father, reports The Beaumont Enterprise.
“I have no personal use for the casket,” he said.
Frankly.. we can’t see it as a conversational piece in our home either…
well, if nobody bids on it, some cheapo could get a really good deal for his own funeral! use and reuse. why let anything go to waste! 🙂
that’s soooo gross…seriously!!!
LOL Matt… Gives a whole new meaning to recycle doesn’t it.
Really, it should be on display somewhere. There was nothing wrong with the exhumation or the autopsy. The fact that the corpse is in such good condition of preservation says something about embalming back then. Todays chemicals hardly last through the few days before burial and the body basically turns to liquid as soon as it goes into the ground. Our modern embalmers can take a lesson about this.
As for the son of J.P. wanting to cash in: He receives about $100,000 annually in royalties. Unfortunately, the Big Bopper had not received a dime for Chantilly Lace, his biggest hit.
