British actor Andy Whitfield, who played the lead character in Spartacus: Blood and Sand died on Sunday from cancer, he was just 39 years old. He was with his family when he passed away in Sydney, Australia, 18 months after he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Andy Whitfield was born in Wales and moved to Australia in 1999. He was virtually unknown as an actor until he landed the lead role in Starz network series, Spartacus. He had been preparing to shoot the second series when his condition was diagnosed.
In a statement released to the Associated Press, it was announced that a “beautiful young warrior,” passed away on a “sunny Sydney morning”. Whitfield’s wife Vashti also said in a statement. “He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have help carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentle man, father and husband he was.”
